Chapter Nine

Surprise: to strike or occur to with a sudden feeling of wonder or astonishment, as through unexpectedness.

Sophia took a long shower because she needed some time to process what she had learned about her new lover. She let the water cascade over her runner’s body. She ran her hands over her well-loved skin and for every drop of water it felt like there were just as many times that she had to push the prospect of love out of her heart. She hated to admit it, but she had been a little crushed to realize that maybe Charlie was the one who wasn’t being honest. The more Sophia thought about it, the more she felt like she was a notch on Charlie’s bed post. Part of her wanted to call Charlie out for being such a hypocrite, but a greater part of her didn’t want to ruin what little time she might have left with Charlie. She resigned herself to enjoying every minute no matter how many she got. She swore to herself that she would keep emotion out of it.

Charlie figured it was a good time to check in on Lola since Sophia was in the shower, especially since she didn’t want to be left alone with her thoughts. She hit the speed dial on her phone. She knew without asking that he was on the phone with a girl named Michelle. “Try not to tie up the line all day and night talking to that girl.”

“She's not just some girl. How many times do I have to tell you that?”

Charlie knew her brother was right, but she wasn’t ready to admit that the little boy who had clung to her after their parents had died was all grown up and ready to need a female in his life other than his big sister and grandmother.

She sighed. “Fine, Mica. Just let me talk to Lola.”

“Why don’t you just walk across the hall and talk to her? Oh wait, that’s right. You’re off talking with some girl.”

“Mica, I swear. If Lola hears you, I will personally see that you never know what it is like to talk to another girl, ever again.”

“All right, all right.”

Sophia listened to the exchange through the thin bathroom walls. It was interesting to hear Charlie’s tone go from motherly to sisterly so quickly. It was quite fascinating, but Sophia was not envious of Charlie for having to be everything. What she was envious of, was having a sibling. She had always wondered what that would be like. She felt
